What to Do After a Bee Sting on the Knee

Posted on October 6, 2026

A bee sting on the knee can cause sudden sharp or burning pain, redness, swelling and itching around the affected area. Because the knee bends and moves constantly, swelling in this location can make walking or bending the leg particularly uncomfortable. Most local reactions improve with basic first aid, although some can become more pronounced over the following hours.

If the bee has left a stinger, remove it promptly by gently scraping it sideways with a fingernail or flat-edged object. Wash the area with soap and water, then apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth for about 10–15 minutes at a time. Resting and elevating the leg can also help reduce swelling. Over-the-counter pain medicine or an antihistamine may help with discomfort or itching when appropriate.

Most bee stings remain limited to the area around the sting, but it is important to watch for signs of a serious allergic reaction. Symptoms such as widespread hives, swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, severe dizziness, or fainting require immediate emergency medical attention.

If the swelling becomes unusually severe, continues to worsen, or the area becomes increasingly painful, warm or develops other concerning symptoms, medical advice may be appropriate. A typical local reaction can be uncomfortable, but knowing the warning signs and responding quickly can make a bee sting much safer to manage.
