By the time the last hailstone fell, the town no longer looked like itself. Lawns were buried under jagged mounds of ice, trees were stripped bare, and cars sat bruised and broken along flooded curbs. Neighbors stepped cautiously outside, staring at shattered windows and torn roofs, trading stunned whispers about the violence of a storm that seemed to come from nowhere. Emergency crews moved slowly through debris-choked streets, checking on the elderly, taping off fallen power lines, and boarding up exposed homes as darkness settled in.

Yet amid the damage, there was a fragile sense of relief. No lives were lost, and that fact alone felt miraculous. Families swept glass from kitchen floors, shared flashlights and blankets, and offered spare rooms to those whose homes were hit hardest. The storm had ripped through their town in minutes, but its memory — and the work of rebuilding — would last much longer.
